What is it?
APOE genotyping identifies which common form of the apolipoprotein E gene a person carries.
The three common variants are:
APOE ε2
APOE ε3
APOE ε4
Everyone inherits one APOE copy from each parent.
What does it assess?
Inherited susceptibility to late-onset Alzheimer disease

Why is it important?
APOE ε4 is the strongest common genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer disease. Carrying one or two ε4 copies increases risk, but it does not mean dementia will definitely develop. Many ε4 carriers never develop Alzheimer disease, and many people with Alzheimer disease do not carry ε4. (nia.nih.gov)

What happens during the test?
