What is it?

MoCA XpressO is a brief digital cognitive-health screening tool created by the team behind the Montreal Cognitive Assessment.

It is designed to provide a quick assessment of memory and brain performance using short tasks involving memory, logic and placement. It is not the same as the clinician-administered full MoCA and is not a diagnostic test. (XpressO by MoCA)

What does it assess?

  • Memory performance

  • Attention

  • Logic

  • Processing

  • Basic executive function

  • Change over time when repeated consistently

Why is it important?

Subtle cognitive changes may occur before they significantly interfere with daily function.

Early screening may help identify people who would benefit from:

  • More detailed cognitive assessment

  • Medication review

  • Sleep assessment

  • Hearing assessment

  • Blood testing

  • Brain imaging

  • Specialist referral

Who may benefit?

Screening may be considered for people with:

  • Memory concerns

  • Changes in attention or executive function

  • Strong family history of dementia

  • Vascular risk factors

  • Sleep apnoea

  • Hearing loss

  • Concern about change from previous function

What happens during the assessment?

The test is completed digitally and involves several brief cognitive tasks.

It usually takes only a few minutes.

Preparation

Complete the assessment:

  • In a quiet environment

  • While wearing usual glasses or hearing devices

  • When rested

  • In the preferred language where available

Advantages

  • Quick

  • Non-invasive

  • Easy to administer

  • Useful as an initial screen

  • May support monitoring over time

Limitations

  • Does not diagnose dementia or mild cognitive impairment.

  • Performance may be affected by anxiety, fatigue, language, education, hearing or vision.

  • A reassuring result does not exclude all cognitive disease.

  • Abnormal findings require further clinical assessment.

How Future Health uses this investigation

Results are interpreted alongside:

  • Medical history

  • Functional concerns

  • Mood

  • Sleep

  • Hearing and vision

  • Cardiovascular risk

  • Medications

  • Blood tests

  • Family history

The purpose is to identify whether more detailed assessment is appropriate.
