What is it?

Mira is an advanced home hormone monitoring system that measures reproductive hormone levels from urine using laboratory-grade technology. Unlike a single blood test, Mira allows hormones to be tracked over days or weeks, providing a dynamic picture of hormonal changes throughout the menstrual cycle.

This makes it particularly valuable for women in perimenopause, where hormone levels fluctuate significantly from day to day and a single blood test often provides limited information.

What does it measure?

Depending on the test wands used, Mira can measure:

  • Luteinising Hormone (LH)

  • Oestrogen Metabolite (E3G)

  • Progesterone Metabolite (PdG)

  • Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)

These measurements can be tracked over multiple weeks or menstrual cycles to identify hormone patterns rather than relying on a single point in time.

Why is it important?

During perimenopause, ovarian hormone production becomes increasingly unpredictable.

Women may experience:

  • Irregular menstrual cycles

  • Hot flushes

  • Night sweats

  • Mood changes

  • Anxiety

  • Sleep disturbance

  • Brain fog

  • Fatigue

  • Reduced libido

  • Heavy or unpredictable bleeding

Because hormone levels fluctuate considerably during this stage, a single blood test may appear "normal" despite significant symptoms.

Serial hormone monitoring provides a clearer picture of changing ovarian function and can help explain symptoms that might otherwise be difficult to interpret.

Mira may also assist women wishing to:

  • Understand whether ovulation is still occurring

  • Monitor cycle variability

  • Identify changes associated with the menopausal transition

  • Better understand symptom patterns

Who may benefit?

Mira may be appropriate for women who:

  • Suspect they are entering perimenopause

  • Have irregular menstrual cycles

  • Experience fluctuating menopausal symptoms

  • Are monitoring ovulation

  • Wish to better understand hormone patterns before commencing treatment

  • Want to correlate symptoms with hormonal changes

  • Prefer longitudinal hormone monitoring rather than isolated blood tests

What happens during the assessment?

Urine samples are collected at home using Mira test wands according to an individualised testing schedule.

The analyser measures hormone concentrations and displays results within the Mira app, allowing trends to be monitored over days, weeks and multiple menstrual cycles.

Your results can then be reviewed together with your clinician.

Preparation

Follow the testing schedule recommended by your clinician.

Testing is usually performed using first morning urine or according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Maintaining consistent testing times improves interpretation of hormone trends.

Advantages

  • Home-based testing

  • Tracks hormone trends over time

  • More informative than a single hormone blood test in many women with perimenopausal symptoms

  • Helps identify ovulation

  • Correlates hormone patterns with symptoms

  • Supports shared decision-making regarding menopause management

Limitations

  • Mira is not a diagnostic test for menopause.

  • Hormone levels naturally fluctuate from day to day, particularly during perimenopause.

  • Results should always be interpreted alongside symptoms, menstrual history, age and clinical assessment.

  • It does not replace blood testing when investigating other endocrine disorders or abnormal bleeding.

How Future Health uses this investigation

Future Health uses Mira primarily to help women understand hormonal patterns across the menopausal transition, rather than relying solely on isolated blood hormone measurements.

Results are interpreted alongside:

  • Symptom questionnaires

  • Menstrual history

  • Age

  • Blood hormone testing (where appropriate)

  • Thyroid function

  • Sleep assessment

  • Body composition

  • Lifestyle factors

This information helps guide personalised discussions around lifestyle strategies, menopausal hormone therapy, contraception and ongoing monitoring.

Future Health Summary

Perimenopause is characterised by changing hormone patterns rather than consistently low hormone levels. Mira provides a practical way to monitor these fluctuations over time, helping women better understand their menstrual cycles, correlate symptoms with hormonal changes and make more informed decisions about their health during the menopausal transition.
