Glucose & Insulin Assessment

Assessment Stage: Baseline Assessment
Included in Future Health Assessment: Yes
Partner: DHM Pathology
Provider: DHM Pathology
Approximate Cost: Included in Future Health Assessment

What is it?

This assessment evaluates how effectively your body regulates blood sugar and insulin.

Rather than identifying diabetes alone, it aims to detect early metabolic dysfunction before diabetes develops.

What does it measure?

  • Fasting Glucose

  • HbA1c

  • Fasting Insulin

Together these markers provide information about:

  • Blood sugar control

  • Insulin production

  • Early insulin resistance

  • Metabolic health

Why is it important?

Insulin resistance often develops many years before type 2 diabetes.

It also contributes to:

  • Heart disease

  • Fatty liver disease

  • High blood pressure

  • Weight gain

  • Dementia

  • Polycystic ovary syndrome

Identifying metabolic dysfunction early provides an opportunity to reverse many of these changes through lifestyle intervention.

Who may benefit?

Recommended for all adults.

Particularly important for people with:

  • Family history of diabetes

  • Overweight or obesity

  • Elevated triglycerides

  • High blood pressure

  • Gestational diabetes

  • PCOS

What happens during the test?

A fasting blood sample is collected.

Preparation

Fast for 8–12 hours prior to testing.

Water is encouraged.

Advantages

  • Detects diabetes

  • Detects pre-diabetes

  • Detects insulin resistance before diabetes develops

  • Highly evidence based

Limitations

Insulin levels vary considerably between individuals and should always be interpreted alongside glucose, HbA1c and clinical context.

How Future Health uses this investigation

Results are interpreted together with:

  • Body composition

  • Nutrition assessment

  • Physical activity

  • Liver health

  • Cardiovascular biomarkers

to identify opportunities for improving metabolic health.

Future Health Summary

Maintaining healthy blood sugar regulation is one of the most effective ways to reduce the future risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and many other chronic diseases.
