What is it?
Breath testing measures hydrogen and methane gases produced by bacteria within the gastrointestinal tract after consuming specific sugars. It is commonly used to investigate carbohydrate malabsorption and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).

Why is it important?

Preparation
Preparation usually includes a restricted diet the day before testing, overnight fasting and temporary cessation of selected medications as directed by the testing laboratory.
