What is a Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure measures the force of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries as your heart pumps. It is one of the most important indicators of cardiovascular and vascular health.
What does it measure?
Systolic blood pressure
Diastolic blood pressure
Blood pressure trends over time
Why is it important?
High blood pressure usually causes no symptoms but significantly increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, heart failure, chronic kidney disease and dementia. Home monitoring provides a more accurate representation of your usual blood pressure than a single clinic reading.
Who may benefit?
Recommended for all adults, particularly those with cardiovascular risk factors, diabetes, kidney disease, a family history of hypertension or elevated clinic readings.
Preparation
Sit quietly for five minutes before measurement, avoid caffeine, smoking and exercise for at least 30 minutes beforehand, and use the same arm for each reading.
Advantages
• Simple and non-invasive
• Evidence-based
• Detects silent disease
• Useful for monitoring treatment and long-term cardiovascular risk
Limitations
A single reading should not be interpreted in isolation. Blood pressure varies throughout the day, therefore repeated home readings provide greater accuracy.
How Future Health uses this investigation
We use a structured 7-day home blood pressure protocol and interpret the results alongside blood tests, body composition, cardiovascular fitness and other investigations to provide a comprehensive assessment of vascular health.
Future Health Summary
Blood pressure is one of the simplest yet most powerful predictors of future cardiovascular health. Identifying elevated blood pressure early allows lifestyle and, where appropriate, medical treatment to reduce the long-term risk of heart disease, stroke and kidney disease.
